Bay Bush Action

In Te Ngahere two people from the Bay Bush Action came in and talked to us about the Ngahere and how our school can become pest free. There names were Brad and stella. We talked about the pests and the threats to our native and endemic birds. They then showed us some traps they made to kill pests and , demonstrated how to use the traps. They generously gave us ten rat traps to set off in our school , but we have not yet had any luck with catching pests around our school so far.

Moment in time

Last week in Te Ngahere we wrote descriptive piece of writing describing a moment in time.We had to describe a forest using present tense verbs. We were focusing on how to use the correct structure to describe a moment in time.I really enjoyed describing the forest and using new words to describe each paragraph. Next time I could write more in my introduction.

A moment in time:Draft

The sound of old trees creaking , about to break. Staring at the plants covered by the huge bush
, patches of green covering the ground. Stretchy vines swaying above , little pebbles hiding
in between the plants.

Let yourself relax with the breeze of wind rubbing upon your face. Watching the flowers
bloom. Looking at the green leaves dropping on the ground , the season going into autumn.

Feeling the rough moss covering the branches. Touching the spiked trees trying not to get
poked. Stepping on the crispy  leaves , filling your ears with noises. Your nose will be twisted
will all beautiful smells there is to be.

The hot sun beaming on your skin , stinging you softly. Running behind the tall tree sitting
in the shade. Birds chirping their hearts out making a beautiful rhythm. Witness the cheeky
monkeys swing above  , eating there delicious banana.Looking at the bright green paradise
smelling the fresh air.

Not only do forest have live nature , it is a relaxing and calm place to be and chill , also to get
away from your annoying family.

Explanation writing

Since last term , Te Ngahere have been working on a explanation about about ecosystems. Our WALT was to use the correct structure for an explanation. In our writing we had to include producers , consumers , decomposers and inorganic matters. I think I did pretty good because I could explain what each thing did and I was very descriptive. Next time I think I could finish my writing a lot quicker.

What is a Ecosystem

An ecosystem is like a type of cycle that uses non-living and living things
like  producers , consumers , Inorganic matter and a decomposer.
In a marine ecosystem it usually contains , sea life, plants , water , sand and bacteria.
These all make up a healthy ecosystem .

What is inorganic matter?  Inorganic matter is a non-living thing like water , sand and
rocks. All of these things are not alive and are non-living. They all help the ecosystem
in different ways. Water helps plants grow and helps fish breathe. Rocks also help by
holding down the plants at the bottom of the ocean , the roots of the plants are holding
on to the bottom of the rocks that holds it down in the ocean.

What does organic matter mean? Organic matter means living ,  something that is alive.
It's the opposite meaning for inorganic matter a non-living thing. For example a fish is
an organic matter because it can move around and swim from place to place but water
can’t.

What are producers? Producers are living things and they use sunlight to grow and then
when the consumers eat the producers they get energy  to move and stay alive , but their
life doesn't last long.. For example : One consumer eats the producer , then the second
consumer eats the first , then its start off the second stage of the ecosystem.

What are consumers? Consumers are living things that eat the producers to get energy
in order to stay alive. For example : after one consumer eats the producer another
consumer will come and eat the first consumer. Consumers hold the ecosystem together
by feeding off the producers then carrying the cycle on until the stage of decomposers.

What is a decomposers? A decomposer also known as fungi , breaks down dead matter
that is then turned into bacteria. Then decomposers release nutrients like carbon and
nitrogen back into the environment. These nutrients are then recycled back into the
ecosystem so that producers can use them.

An ecosystem is very fragile and can’t cope with a very big change within the cycle.
If one of the consumers stop working if could affect the whole ecosystem ,and then
it would break up then the ecosystem would be unbalanced and would have to restart.
When it is unbalanced producers would stop growing , consumers would overfill the
ocean , decomposers won’t break down dead matter so all of these problems would
break the ecosystem.

Animation

Last term, Te Ngahere each created a food chain animation. Our WALT was to find a food chain and re-create it into an animation to show how it worked and screencastify it. I enjoyed making my animation, but didn't like putting my voice over it . Next time I think I could use more expression to make it more exciting.
